Excellence in Ending Homelessness - Adults Nominee
Program - Lower North Shore/Northern Beaches Homelessness Support Service/ Fairlight Centre at Mission Australia
Please give your reasons for nominating this program.
LNSNB has always been a service with the no wrong door approach. When someone presents to the program regardless of their needs they are offered a service even if it is only a cup of tea and someone to talk to.
Recognising that many clients accessing the service have a history of trauma we ensure that the program provides a safe environment for them to identify their strengths as well as their own coping skills.
It is estimated that the program has supported over 10,000 people over a thirty year period. It is no surprise that there are still individuals that come to the service for support that were accessing the program when it was first established in the late 70’s. Some of our long term clients refer to the program as” their only family”
Strong partnerships with local stakeholders are a key in providing best outcomes for service users. Locally the program is well known and respected for the work it has done and still does.
Locally the program has been instrumental in delivering the Housing First Model. LNSNB
During the last financial year 2015-2016, The Fairlight Centre supported 338 people that were experiencing homelessness or were at risk of homelessness. A total of 71 individuals were provided with crisis or transitional accommodation, with a total of 1494 supports provided across the total number of clients supported. A total of 24 clients were transitioned into NSW Housing and Community Housing properties during the same period.
It is no surprise that a local benefactor recognises the acheivments of the program coming forth with a generous offer which will see our program expand from 8 beds to 33 beds.
