Organisation - Taldumande Youth Services

Please give your reasons for nominating this organisation.

For the past 40 years, Taldumande, has provided a range of accommodation and support programs to young people. Once a small specialist organisation working with homeless or at-risk youths, Taldumande is now one of the largest SHS Provider for the Northern Sydney district working with over 501 children and young people a year aged 12 to 21 years.

Particularly over the last decade the culture of Taldumande has valued the extensive evidence base which guides program design and staff behaviour in case management practices. We provide a holistic and flexible approach in working towards successful outcomes for youth. We focus on supporting family members as well as the young person whenever possible, with the aim of returning young people home to live, or re-establishing and reconciling young people’s relationships with these significant others.

What outcomes were delivered as a result of this organisation?

Our Crisis Refuge in Neutral Bay houses seven young people at a time and this year we have seen 49 young people enter the Crisis Refuge with 78 per cent of them returning to their families, friends or transitioning into other Taldumande accommodation services. When a young person moves on from our Crisis Refuge, we can provide a continuum of services through a semi-independent house which is staffed overnight, and 16 independent houses and units with 32 beds.

The need for support and accommodation in these contract areas of Northern Sydney is huge. We have assisted over 501 individual young people, some of whom needed repeat assistance on two or more occasions over the year.

We are enormously proud of our Semi-Independent program models, one of them being Leith House located in Pennant Hills. It provides a comprehensive accommodation and support service for adolescents aged 16-18 years who are homeless. It is important to be clear on what our “semi-independent” looks like at Leith – case managers are on site in the house office most days of the week, and youth workers work evening shifts.

Dennis McLaughlin

I am writing to express my enthusiastic support for Taldumande Youth Services lnc.

Sydney Drug Education and Counselling Centre (SDECC) is a Not for Profit, charitable
organisation which specialises in providing free counselling and support for young
people aged 14 -25 with problematic alcohol and other drugs (AOD) use and their
families.

ln my present role, as well as in my last position as Service Manager with Kedesh
Rehabilitation Services Ltd, I have worked closely with Taldumande over a four-year period.

Taldumande makes a significant contribution in supporting vulnerable children, young
people and their families through crisis response, residential care and specialised
casework.

They operate the only 241-/ crisis refuge for young people in Northern Sydney and offer
supported accommodation and community programs that provide a streamlined
pathway, from homelessness and family breakdown, to independence and stability.
Taldumande and SDECC collaborate on a regular basis to work towards positive
outcomes for many of our clients. We value the partnership.
